Hi all

I am interested in an electric bike, it would be for commuting and road use only. I have had a Demo day on the BMW ebike that's a 250 Watt motor pedal assisted with a range of about 40 miles. It is governed so that at 15 miles an hour the cycle assist turns off. But at £1,700 it's a lot of money.

I've been having a look at the conversion kits, these are quite a bit cheaper and higher wattage so more powerful. I've spoken to both Brian Sussex and John Harvey for some advice.

 

Anybody else got an e bike either one that's been converted or a manufactured one I'll be really interested to see how you got on and any recommendations thanks Nick

Hi Nick - It's not so much the make of the bike but the make of the motor system, and the Bosch system is the best and most widely serviceable. The wife has one and loves it, the battery lasts her for three 24 mile round trips a week and still has about half power left.

That range is impressive. Borrowed a Nissan leaf managed to get from Exeter to Okehampton and had 28 miles left

 Hi Nick

The BMW has the Bosch crank drive and has a max of 60 miles. What size is your wife's battery......if that not too personal :) This one is 400 wh battery. Also which make is your wife's bike.

If you have a good bike you could always convert it to an E bike with one of THESE you'll still need a battery + charger (£200 should do it) all the reports I've read have been generally good for these units. They use a helical gear inside so are much quieter that most other conversions and they go very well.

If you look them up on You tube there's plenty of videos of people building E bikes using these units.

I bought a haibike 650rc allmtn last year. Got Yamaha motor. Bloody brilliant. In my view superior to Bosch in the way it delivers its power and torque.

 

Bought a dezstrictor - but haven't fitted it.

 

I will be doing a coast to coast on mine next year across the 3 national parks - lakes, dales and nyork moors.

 

In the lowest setting I can get around 40 to 50 miles.

 I had considered a conversion, and liked the idea and was hoping someone would come along with one that they had used and recommended. I will have a good look at the link. Thanks

My wife bought a Ghost e-bike a couple of months ago after her heart problems and she absolutely loves it. My problem is now keeping up on the hills.

It has a 250W Bosch motor with a 400Wh battery and apparently has a range of 75-80 miles on eco setting but we've never reached the limit !

I can see me getting one when I become more decrepit than I am .......

Up to 250w motor it is counted as a bicycle (250w for a tandem 200w for a solo)

More than 250w it becomes a motor vehicle requiring a licence insurance etc

Mid mounted motors are ok for off road but most conversion kits are hub motors which make the wheel too heavy to be agile enough off road.

There is a bloke doing hub motor conversions from his garage behind the Eastern Eye restaurant, (a couple of doors down from the old Greenlane motorcycles shop), which he charges a couple of hundred quid for

Specialised latest off roader is about seven grand. I think I'll wait for a second hand one, but that type of machine will definitely be my next purchase.

 I wouldn't buy a second hand Specialised.

Had a frame defect from manufacturing on an immaculate second hand one and they told me to jog on.
