Having lived in Devon near Okehampton for 2 years I went for an exploratory ride on my road bike. I rode up past the Okehampton Camp and kept following what looked like the main tarmac road. There were non asphalt roads everywhere many of which are shown on the OS map as "other" road. I didn't see any prohibited signs, indeed on the asphalt parts there were camper vans up there and a car park is even shown on the OS map. My Garmin road GPS showed some of the roads. It was getting dark and I was on a heavy adventure bike fitted with pure road tyres so I decided discretion was the better than valour and turned back when the asphalt stopped. I didn't fancy having to walk off in pitch black if something went wrong.
My question of course is; can I drive/ride on the "other" roads. Clearly some parts you can or why have a car park. Are there prohibited signs I missed?
The ring road up there has been shut for a few years, you are only meant to go to the first carpark. It was awesome up there when you could ride it and I miss it
Yes, I have the overlays and it wasn't on them but it just seemed so road-like especially as it started with tarmac. Must've been great when it was open. I don't suppose they would consider opening some routes in winter? Ah just dreaming I'm sure it's all been tried.
