Seems chris birch is being paid by KTM to race one of their big adventure bikes in the Hellas rally, he demonstrates how he plans to get the bike moving when its stuck using the back wheel as a winch. Seems to work far better than it sounds like it would!
Clever and seemingly quite efficient way for one rider to extract a bike from a hole. It must take some time to unwind the rope from around the rear wheel afterwards, but nothing like the time it could take to go looking for help...
Note to self...look for a length of rope to add to back pack....
Could have done with knowing this when I blundered into the quicksand quagmire behind the landslip on 192-192 a while back when it took me an hour and a half to drag the bike out, or on the whitey up near North Tawton when I did 'one last lane' only to spend another hour being eaten by midges while I dug the bike by hand out of a sticky wallow filled with semi liquid muddy clay which assumed the consistency of cement after it had flowed through the spokes, the only redeeming factor being the protection from midge bites afforded by the liberal coating of mud leading to my a swamp thing like appearance after my efforts. Good for the complexion perhaps, but not the sense of humour.
it is amazing how completely screwed you can get if you get a bike stuck on your own, i very nearly had to sleep out on a trail in japan after i got stuck once. I had come down a shale slope only to find the route blocked by a landslide farther along, then couldn't get back up the slope
