Whilst many on here are familiar with the Exeter Trial, some may not be, so just to summarise:
This year two hundred & fifty nine entrants, bikes, sidecars and three and four wheel cars, leave from three start venues at Betty Cottles (Oakhampton), Cirencester and Popham Airfield (Basingstoke) from 7:30pm on friday night. They arrive at Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, and re-start at midnight and via rest halts at Crealy Park (4am) and Ilsington Village Hall (10am) they start to arrive at the finish in Torquay from 1pm onwards, with the last competitor due to arrive at 5pm, in time for a shower and change ready for the Dinner in the Riviera Centre.
On the way they tackle most of the notable lanes including Fingle, Tillerton, Simms, Tipley, and last but not least Slippery Sam. Simms is usually the most challenging (only 4 cars got up last year) and has lots of spectators enjoying the tribulations of the understandably now weary competitors. Simms also has an organised spectator car park. First Bike should be at Simms at 10:40, and is normally a favorite TRF spectator spot.
The only TRF entrant I am aware of is Exeter regular Paul Studley on his CRF at no 16.
I will be trying to run the lunch halt car park and control at Ilsington Village Hall where hot food (pasties) and lots of cake is available to all.

Awesome event the Exeter! The lanes look completely different with after a long, usually wet night! Simms is a different beast with people lining the hedges
There might be a few trees down over the coming days/hours, i guess you have this covered but if help is required i will return the help/respect you've shown the Devon TRF
It is quite an experience to ride Simms with an audience of several hundred spectators. The atmosphere is wonderful with such a crowd. The hedges are packed and in recent years a fence has been needed to keep spectators from spilling onto the hill. I will not be standing there again after a flying stone broke my nose but if you have not been to watch then you should go and see what I will be missing while I sleep after my night shift
Thanks Roger, many of the lanes have been checked by the local landowners, and so far we appear to be OK.
I have asked the CoC where he would like help and the ones we have not yet checked are:-
Slippery Sam 202-053 and French's 202-037
Simms 191-088 and Lenda 191-087 and Tipley 191-089
If someone local could check any of these tomorrow (Wednesday) it would be big help.
Something to plan more for next year though.
Thanks again.
We shall be following Mr Studley thought not as brave as him as we have a roof and heater so if you do come to watch give us a wave - car 103 (we are up the front of the cars this year at least to start ) a little red Suzuki....

Hasn't Slippery Sam got the agricultural trailer and digger attachment dumped at the bottom to prevent 4x4s using the lane? I thought these obstructions had been there for 3-4 years. What happened at last years Trial? did the local farmer responsible, Mr Stoneman, remove them for the event and then replace them afterwards?
My hairdresser (don't laugh) told me just before Christmas that Simms has been worked on with concrete to take out some of the worst bits. Her husband does the trial in his mk 1 Escort.
Don't know if she's right, has anyone been up recently?
This year Stig says he's showing no mechanical sympathy - clear it or break it - look foward to the abuse
Yes ...... the Stig was correct. You were the first car up Tipley, at the speed you went past that is not surprising ! Didn't count the number of times your wheels touched the floor between the start and us at the re-start ..... but it wasn't many
Good effort Jon and Co.

We seemed to be first car up most sections after Crealy and cleared all the sections apart from Simms - which again we we first up - also first car from main trial at finish.
It was an absolutely fantastic trial - thanks to all of you that made it possible

I found a couple of good videos on YouTube of Simms and saw Capn Paul go up successfully.
I was puzzled by the restart for the bikes. I couldn't decide what the difference was in the bikes that sailed through it and those that restarted Anyone know?
Also, do you fail if you forget to stop at the top?
Hi Brian
Paul was in Class B (Solos up to 450) - This year Classes A (M/c's built before 1970) and B were required to restart at the Yellow boards.
Other bikes including sidecars did not need to restart this year.
Normally you would not stop at the top of a hill, but due to the number of pedestrians in the lane after the finish of Simms, all competitors had to stop at the top and be reminded to travel slowly to Lenda Lane.
You need to pay attention for this one:---
The A boards are the section end for Class 1, also for any class if no competitor in that class reaches the section end board.
Nick
For anyone who is interested despite what it says on any provisional results some of you may have seen - we did not retire.......we were the 1st car to reach the finish in the main trial, cleared all but 1 section which was Simms (we were the first car on the hill this year).
I will say no more - until we see the final results.

Well thats a shame - for 3 years I have had some great adventures and encountered some amazing people. I loved the Exeter and Lands End Trials and though yet to have a go at The Edinburgh was going to next year......I enjoyed it so much as for me it was one of the last things I had found that involved 'real' people and it was the last bastion of the 'no bull****' brigade. However events this year have really knocked me for six and as such the 2018 Exeter was my last MCC event.
I shall continue to go trialling (on non MCC events) but for me the Exeter was 'the one'. At least after watching it since a small child I was lucky enough to have competed in it - but sadly the medal we dreamed of and worked so hard for 3 years to achieve has been 'stripped' away and I simply could not face such disappointment or the attitude of certain individuals again.
So despite having been handed a finishers cert - at the finish and being then congratulated by all the officials for being the first car back we have been classed as retired.........
What a massive kick in the nuts
