A good quality crash helmet will protect you. I wore ear plugs until buying a Schoei helmet which made them unnecessary.
At work I wear this type which stays put and is non intrusive. The band sits under the chin and could fit inside a crash helmet.
You could ride a quieter bike but wind noise is worse than engine noise with a loose helmet
These are the decibel limits prescribed by law for motorcycles. 80 Db road 94 Db enduro
Bearing in mind that 90 Db is ten times as loud as 80 Db because the scale is logarithmic it is very obvious that, for example, an enduro bike would be a bad idea for anyone with sensitive ears......
At last a subject I know something about!
Probably the ideal solution is to get some inserts that have been made for your ears. They last for years as long as you don't loose them, and are the best at reducing the amount of noise getting through. A lot of the road bikers use them.
If the 'EAR' type foam plugs are falling out, you either have big ear canals, or you are not inserting them fully.
Thanks guys,
Thanks for the input,
I was out on a secret squirrel run yesterday and a bloke recommended Honiton Hearing for custom made inserts,
so will probably go that route...
Me
I use Alpine. They are comfortable and effective, not too pricey and quick to order. See https://www.alpinehearingprotection.co.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI0Zih-7-V3wIVl53VCh07FwbjEAAYASAAEgLpbPD_BwE
I have been into Honiton Hearing and they have taken an impression of my inner ear,s. and the mouldings sent off.
I have gone for the attenuated ones,as then you can hear satnav or music if you have in helmet speakers..
rather than the solid ones,as he said some ppl have a problem with balance because of total noise loss..
It was very easy taking the moulding, First a very small camera with a very bright light was inserted and a photo taken of the inner ear each side (No brain to be seen )
Then a small round piece of foam inserted, with cotton string attached.
and then a squirted liquid of polymer to fill the ear up,
removed after 5 minutes,very easily,
then a quick camera check to make sure all ok..
So will report back when i get them and have them fitted..

This what you get for your custom ear audio inserts.
Red is the right,
Blue is the left,
A very nice case, brush, insert ear gel.
£85..
Can come in a variety of colours but it would be a red spot for right, blue spot for left, regardless of your chosen colour.
I purchased 5 other cases for bits n bobs for my tool kit tut. £1 each,
i wore them home in the van, very comfortable and stifles the noise back considerably, i tried my helmet on when i got home, needed to pull the helmet apart more to get it on,
Removal was harder, ears dont squish in to aid removal.
They have been recommended to me as well mike just not got round to making an appointment

i have used them a few times now and they outer part that sits aginst your ear will need shaving down a bit,
as when i remove the helmet it has a tendancy to pull one or the other out...
as i,cant pull the hemet out far enough apart.
still impressed though.
After many month's of use in the gardening work being used daily, my ears have got used to them,
They slip in easily and are fine under the helmet aswell,
Defiantly a worthwhile investment..
