After Steves very good advice when viewing my new crash bars about the stock plastic bash plate I just wondered if there was any DIY advice or drawings etc because looking at the Motech ones they are approx £180+ and I aint paying that.
There are aluminium suppliers on eBay offering free cutting if you supply the drawing and I have found the below drawing on a transalp forum so just wondered if anyone had already tried this approach?
I would just take the plastic one off and make something that resembled that. As long as the holes line up and it does the job, it doesn't have to be too clever.
Thats a nice job!
Ive made several over the years.
The tricky bit, Getting the holes in the correct place!!
Sounds obvious, but it isnt as easy as it sounds.
Might be reinventing the wheel, but these are my basic tips.
Take the one you have as pattern, make a simple jig, bolted through the mounting holes.
I then make the guard in stiff cardboard, 3 bits. Masking tape will hold whilst fiddling.
Worth remembering that arches are much stronger than flat.
I put curves into the sides for this reason.
Once youre happy with shape, cut the alloy sheet, minimum 4mm, I use 6mm.
Ask someone nicely to tig the panels.
Then place welded bash plate over jig and drill mounting holes.
That way, theres some chance it will fit, be strong enough and have clearance to the bits that matter.
If thats a load of b****x, im always willing to learn!!
