Any triumph experts on here?


I've just picked up a 1966 Triumph 500 Daytona, and have a couple of issues I'd like some help with.

Anybody familiar with these?

I'll give it a try.

I've had a 1955 pre-unit Tiger 100 ever since I bought it in 1966 for £17 10/- as a non runner. (below)

The 1966 model you ask about is a unit construction and should be easier to repair.

Nice!

So I have 3 main issues currently:

1) always jumps out of first gear when it reaches a certain revs. If I keep the revs low it doesn't do it.
2) coughs & splutters above a certain revs. Again, if I keep it low, it rides smoothly and pulls well. It has electronic ignition and a brand new Amal carb.
3) Speedo is way out. 40 is showing as about 60. I suspect I have a 1:1.25 drive where I need a 1:2 drive, based on my research today. This isn't as important to sort as the first 2.

Any tips on improving the front brake would be welcome too!

Right, here goes for my pennyworth, Alex:-

 

Item 1 - Jumping out of first gear

I would check basic adjustments - clutch movement, push rod adjustment on clutch pressure plate, then think about worn splines and gear teeth.

Item 2 - Cough and splutter

This is basically adjustment to carburettor. Mixture, tick over, clean jets, right sized jets, throttle cutaway, air filter.

Item 3 - Speedo reading fast

Check the ratio of the speedo drive - as you said.

Item 4 - Front brake

Check the thickness of the shoe linings, adjust the cable for slack, is the brake lever loose? is the brake arm long enough on the backplate?

 

Another source of checking is by looking on Triumph Twin web pages question and answer pages that will point to the basics and right solutions.

Don't give up until you have fixed the problems.

Brings back memories of when my dad had a Daytona. He had to sell it when he found kick starting it very difficult in his 70s.
