I know that this is a perennial topic, and if I asked 100 people Id probably get 100 different answers, its a very personal choice depending on many factors, but Id be keen to narrow it down. I currently ride a Honda CRF 250 Rally and not only is a bit too high for me and my novice riding, it is also getting so bashed up it's costing a fortune to repair.
So not a CRF then, I also need an electric start (+ kickstart possibly) I also do not want a 2 stroke, so that rules out the Beta X trainer and others for example. I don't need 40bhp, I just need to get up a few steep trails, ride on tarmac, and enjoy riding a lightweight bike. I have a budget of about £2000, but it's more about the bike, and feeling more balanced on Devon's slippery tracks. I have considered the Beta Alp 200, and also the AJP PR3. Anyone have experience of these bikes, or maybe a better suggestion - I am retiring the Honda and repairing it ready for some Spanish TET adventures, so just a scruffy bombproof bike for Devon fun.
Yamaha XT225 Serow is what you need. Low light and well designed with folding tip levers and bash plate as standard. The pop on/off indicator lenses are a nice touch, pick up the parts after an off and pop it back together with nothing broken
TTR250 may be too tall but sound machines otherwise
The obvious choice really would be the CRF230 but very hard to find one at a reasonable price
