New 2012 Honda CRF250L

This was in this weeks MCN at the Milan show and looks like its coming to the UK at a price of less than £3,500. See article top right corner of news paper "More Tokyo Stars"

At last a new sensible trail bike from the big 4.

http://www.visordown.com/motorcycle-news-new-bikes/tokyo-honda-crf250l/19469.html

MCN November 16

Yeah spotted that, interesting considering you can get a decent 2nd hand for less than that.

And the red & black paint job in the link looks dam fine!

The yellow bike is a rework of the Honda 250 zoomer ( a beefed up version of the 50cc zoomer. They made a military version which filtererd onto the USA market.

Looks like something lego would make but I like it.

Blimey, they took their timeyawn

2 years ago Honda said they were laucnhing the XR250L, a fuel injected low power version of a CRF250 designed to replace the no-longer imported CRF230.

Then, for whatever reason, they decided against it.

This looks like the bike I saw back then but with a CRF moniker.

Agree the red and black combo looks nice.

 11611-yamaha-xtw250-ryoku-concept-500x388.jpg

Described as the SUV motorcycle, the Yamaha XTW250 RYOKU was designed to carry heavy loads for both on and off the road. The concepts name suggests it may share elements of Yamahas XT250 and TW200 dual sports. In fact, the fat front tire, wheels and forks look almost identical to those on the TW200 while the shape of the fueltank resembles that of the XT250. Throw in a bit of the Honda Ruckus voila, the Yamaha XTW250 RYOKU.

Yamaha hasnt revealed any specifics, but does describe features such as a low-mounted large-capacity fuel tank, chassis guards, removable LED lights, and a low center-of-gravity high-load rear carrier.

I note this bit with interest "designed to carry heavy loads" smile as that sounds good being a pie fan biggrin

It wasn't on the Honda stand at the NEC last week, so I asked a member of Honda staff on the stand. He apparently knew nothing about it!

I told him it'd been in MCN and he just shrugged his shoulders.

That's boody heavy compared to about 105kg for the CRF230 it's supposed to be better than. And with road gearing and  asteady 37mph, most small capacity four strokes would be able to get 100mpg. On really low gearing and varied riding I still get 70-80mpg.confuse

Nice to have a rear disc brake at last. Shame it seems to weigh 35kghmm

OTR for £3,950 - bargain - proper low maintenance trail bike with Honda build quality.

Who is Exeter's nearest Honda offroad dealer and who is going to be the first DTRFG member to get one of these eh?  wink

I'll stick with my 230 thanks, simple to work on,reliable, lighter and looks 'proper'.

I would however be tempted by the Mugen version, that will probably be £10.000 though !

Good price and its a honda smile but I can't get over the 144KG weight and that alone would stop me getting one hmm thats the reason I flogged the Raid.....

Its almost  the same as strapping 2 x bags of cement on the KTM ashamed - no really - as I recall the KTM is about 100KG  (and thats before several bits of it fell off).

Not a problem if you don't fall off jt wink

Also it's about the same weight as a TTR or WR250R which are also genuine trail/road rather than enduro bikes.

I am almost tempted, however..................

In general, never buy the 1st generation of any bike (or car).

Any real world problems are usually sorted by 2nd gen & in general things are held back on 1st models so they can introduce the 'new & improved' model later.

That said, I am still tempted (almost wink)

Your WR250R, is it a first generation?
..and why are you already looking at a replacement Steve (or would it be in addition to it)?

As the owner of a first generation I can tell you that subsequent models (or just later years) can also go the other way, they can get "cheaper" as the manufacturer starts to look at cutting the manufacturing costs and standardising common components etc.

I think it would be a safe buy in that pretty much all of the components are off Honda's existing parts rack - all well and truly tested bearing in mind the huge volume of sales wink

Honestly..... I think the WR250R is a better bike.
Steve, keep what you've got now.wink

The CRF250L is a really nice looking bike but I think is more a competitor for the 2010 KLX250 but as the KLX is lighter (138 kg) it probably wins - both are heavy weights though (wet weight) and it's not even as if either of them have substantial tank capacity. Granted they can go a long way on not much fuel but they are still pretty heavy for a small capacity bike (and this is coming from a DRZ owner - the kettle IS calling the pot black!biggrin)

CRF250L spec

KLX250 spec

Now I know it's not all about how much a bike weighs, it's how heavy it feels to ride (and pick up) so maybe that is where the Honda will redeem itself. confuse

Next couple of years will see a surge in 2t bikes
Maintenance, yep I'm the only person I would buy a bike from
£200 approx every 2 years sounds good to me

On a TTR or similar genuine trail bike probably new rings and valve stem oil seals at 25,000+miles - about £60 inc. a gasket set - not too shabby eh?

Not many trail tour companies run 2-strokes for some reason.....

And to be fair not many run TTRs
Sorry was comparing enduro 4t with similar 2t.
Sure TTRs/ Wr/ drzzz have long service intervals and are more road based,
But my GasGas is used for pure fun, for a small part of the week, the more
involving the riding experience the better .

Had my current CRF450X for just over three years change the oil and filter very regularly and keep the air filter clean, check the valve clearances occasionally but have never needed to adjusted them. It will need a rebuild one day but by then I will have saved that money by using less petrol than a 2t and don't have to carry any oil aroundwink or breath any of that smoke inbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin  remember we are not top flight riders well I don't profess to besmile we all use them for maybe a few enduros and a bit of laning NOT RACING. Don't believe all the manufacturers maintenance schedules mine says something silly like new piston after 15 hoursdisbeliefno And because its RED it dosen't go wrong, WELL NOT YET ANYWAYsmile

Dont do any maintenence on mine?? Apart from wearing parts that any bikes needs ie wheel bearings etc?

I expect tour operators dont run due to the added cost of 2 stroke etc?

Well I've watched the vid looks a nice bike but sounds a bit gutless on the road second hand make a nice traily after bars have been changed tyres replaced and ecked a little bit more steam out of the motor ,it's a Honda and should be well put together but ! Is it any better than a second hand 2004 wrf Yamaha or Honda crf ?

Fuel consumption between large 4t & 300 2t bout the same
Had a 450 4 t as laner, not the best machine for job In hand . XR 250 was ace, but died in north Devon , poss casting fault on kickstart casing ( hence later models electric start only) Honda eh!

Loved the XR tho great bike, XR 200 even better.

That's exactly what I thought when the vid kept showing the riders throttle hand, which then highlighted a serious lack of engine rev pick up lol.

2 stroke guys - enjoy your bikes, they are fun things and we all love a 2 stroke, there's no need to keep trying to justify them to us 4 stroke guys.biggrinwink

I rode a 2011 KLX250 in and around the jungles of Thailand last year, overall I'd say it's a nice traily but after a week of 6 hour riding you find 138kg seems doubled and the suspension lets you know it, upper body strengh is needed if you keep picking it up often, seems top heavy and under sprung with rubbish tyres for anything but Tarmac, very good fuel injected tame/predictable engine which didn't miss a beat even after 'submarining' it a few times! two punctures ,1 snake and a lost piece of plastic off the side of the fuel injector body after 600kms, let's see if the Honda measures up? Both too nice to ride laning I'm sure

Saw one in a Honda dealers today.........................not impressed, it felt very, very heavy for a 250 and definitely a 'budget' trail bike

Quality was not a patch on the XR range of old

Cheap controls, brake and gear lever made of cheap steel and no bendy tips

Finish was very poor for a Honda, with loads of cheap steel in the frame

Disappointed
